Army Level is an aesthetic online multiplayer feature in Dawn of War II: Retribution. It is the equivalent of Rank in Dawn of War II and Dawn of War II: Chaos Rising. Playing multiplayer matches – the "ranked games" accessed under "Find a Game" in the main menu, or public custom matches with all-human teams – award Army Level points to participants. Army Level is not connected to Elo skill rating, which measures actual skill; it could be called a multiplayer XP system. You get more Army Level points if you win, but you always get some, and your Army Level can never go down.

There are 60 Army Levels for each race. Initially the steps come every 1,000 points, but gradually increase until at the final ranks you need 10,000 points to advance a level. As a rough approximation, you can get up to 1,000 points for winning a match and about about half for losing. This means you will need a whole lot of games to reach that 260,000 points for Army Level 60. Not to mention doing it for multiple races!

So what does Army Level get you? Eye candy. Most ranks do nothing, really, but certain milestone ranks unlock new armor or weapon visuals for your units. For example, upon reaching Army Level 3 with Space Marines, you unlock the Scout Rare Armor, equipping all your Scout Squads with new shiny armor visible to other players. After some other goodies on the way there, at Army Level 29 you get the even shinier Scout Epic Armor. And so on.

The changes caused by rank are purely aesthetic and have no gameplay effect (except possibly demoralizing the opponent who sees all your troops wearing Epic gear and thinks you must be totally pro).

Changes from Chaos Rising[]

  • It is now called Army Level instead of Rank
  • Point requirements have been halved (the threshold for Rank 60 used to be 500,000)
  • The individual Army Levels no longer have titles (e.g., Class 3 Terminator)
  • You can gain points from custom matches, as long as they are public and have human players included in the match.
